BT are to upgrade their Vision boxes, over the air, with Linux and ditch Microsoft Windows CE.

What  a crackingly good idea, I might phone them later! I was also pretty disapointed to discover the new box isn't DVB-T2 compatible, also rather odd they advertise HD On Demand Content all over their website but don't give you an HDMI cable! :s

Tried that and no go, they wanted to send an engineer out, which if it was a customers problem would be about £117!!!! :(

One thing I have discovered is they have disabled the RF Out Modulator so I can no longer feed other TV's in the house via RF! (Thanks for that BT!) There is a menu option that says its off but I can find no way of enabling it, hoping if we get a mod chip to work on this we can restore that feature. Though its a little less pressing now my bedroom TV has freeview built in but still rather annoying!

Also was rather surprised to learn that it doesn't support DVB-T2, but searching around BT have said they are working on a box that does, so maybe we'll see another release of BT Vision in the near future is Freeview HD support.

Didn't realise they were so cheap, worth it just for the hard drive! :)

I'm working on getting a new box, know a few people with them now and my telephone exchange gets upgraded to fibre in May so was thinking of having a line installed and getting a new Vision Box. I'll happily dissasemble / photo it or might even consider posting it to somone if it will mean we can improve the knowlege on these things, and get them working right.

Hi, I have the new black box, i have taken it apart and the hdd in this one is a SATA drive, however when connecting it to pc i can not initalize drive .. i think they have locked the drive, if anyone has had any luck with this let me know

Did you just get the new box when you signed up or have you got it as part of a trial? I'm just wondering if these are the standard boxes given out to customers now?

Also have you tried reading the drive with "Copy+" ? Its a long shot but they may have adopted the XTV system like Sky, just a thought!

Hi there and welcome to the forum. If you can help us by posting the Model number of your box and any extra info about it you can I'm sure someone will be able to assist you. Is it one of the new Black boxes? I have a friend who is trialling one of those and i'm trying to talk him in to letting me take it apart for scientific / research purposes! ;)

I used the one like Mick, fashioned up from an old Printer Cable I butchered then chopped up a USB lead to provide the +5v for my programmer. So the Printer lead went in the Parallel and the USB in a spare port and job was a good un.

Everything in the How To section is still current, and should be enough to get you going. WinCE is ok but information on the patched files is sketchy. Linux might be a better idea but I'm not sure where they are with that as regards functionality.

Hi,
Im thinking about embarking on this project and was wondering whether this modification has left the box with all the functions;

tv, recording and epg ?

Nope you will currently end up with a simple freeview receiver with HDMI out and EPG. The pause / rewind and PVR facilities will not work. I guess the next question you will as is why bother? The majority of us doing this do not have an account / broadband with the right company to get it working at all without modification.

The modifications on the WinCE TV2Client seem very secretive but I guess that's because its copyrighted work. I'm hoping the Linux guys will be able to offer the full freeview and PVR functionality, and will hopefully eb able to properly document and explain it, but I'm not sure where they are with it all.
